Ecological Egyptian Furniture: Reform Studio | Eco design

Afroculture.net is delighted to introduce to you the sublime ecological Egyptian furniture from the Reform Studio company. Reform Studio is an award-winning design and furniture studio based in Cairo, Egypt.
This company is founded by Hend Riad and Mariam Hazem. In order to solve plastic-related waste problems, Reform Studio has developed a design method called “Plastex. “With thelp of design researcher Dina Amin, Plastex is a new award-winning ecological material made by weaving discarded plastic bags and threads. Her plastic bags are saved, sorted, sterilized, cut and intertwined. It is a solid and durable material with contemporary colors. “Reform Studio reused 4000 plastic bags in 2013 and 2014, the target was to re-use 790,000”
In addition, it should be noted that the average duration of use of a disposable plastic bag is only 12 minutes. For a material that takes years to degrade, using it as a disposable item is not practical at all. Plastic bags thrown away have a negative impact on the environment. So the idea is to extend the life cycle of plastic bags before it is labeled as “trash”. By looking at them as a raw material rather than waste.
Reform Studio creates Egyptian ecological furniture (chairs, benches, stools) made from Plastex material, that is, weaving plastic bags and threads. The Reform Studio Grammy Chairs have a simple design and vivid colors. They incorporate handmade fabric, Plastex. The company was able to transform plastic into a new, environmentally sustainable fabric made by hand. She has received several awards and distinctions from her exemplary work.

On the other hand, the company’s project also involves re-launching the Egyptian weaving industry and supporting sustainable change on a global scale.
