A sacred cultural site

The Goo-Moremi Gorge is a beautiful canyon with waterfalls, located in the Tswapong Hills in eastern Botswana. It is a sacred and historic cultural site that tells the story of the Bapedi/Batswapong people.

The locals believe that the Goo-Moremi Gorge is home to the spirits of their ancestors and that this place has supernatural powers. As such, it has been declared a national heritage site. And it took a long time for the locals to accept the walks, given its sacred nature.

How is this place managed?

The Moremi Gorge is a national monument. This sacred site is managed by the Ministry of National Museums, Monuments, and Art Gallery. This means that hiking in the area is only permitted with a guide.

And there are a number of rules to follow:

  • or using flash photography in certain areas.

This monument involves local residents in the development of the ecotourism non-consumption zone. It should be noted that for residents, the region is very important spiritually (land of their ancestors) and religiously.

Visitors are advised to be accompanied by a spiritual guide who will explain the mysteries and secrets of the region.
