The world is going through dark times because of the coronavirus. To avoid the spread of the virus, citizens of the world must respect rules of containment and hygiene. Since the start of this epidemic, many innocent people have died.
Among them was the former OM president. He died of coronavirus in Dakar at the age of 68.
Pape Diouf is considered like a “father”, a “mentor”, a “uncle”, for many. Pape Diouf death created a strong emotion in football world in France and Senegal. He was also an ex-journalist, former agent for football stars and candidate for mayor of Marseille. He has helped many football players to have successful careers.
We can remember that he was the only black president of a club in Europe. He brought OM back to the top between 2005 and 2009. And he is also a voice in the fight against racism.
“I am the only black president of a club in Europe. It is a painful observation, like European and, above all, French society, which excludes ethnic minorities, “he had explained to the magazine Jeune Afrique.
But what happened?
Ex- former OM president lives in France and part of the year in Senegal. Unfortunately, he finds himself contaminated by the Covid-19 virus in Dakar. His condition is getting worse. He is on respiratory support at Fann Hospital in Senegal, specializing in infectious and tropical diseases.
While he was to be repatriated to France by medical aircraft during the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, his condition deteriorated. He died of the virus shortly before 8 p.m. on Senegalese soil.
How did his funeral take place?
Diouf was buried on Wednesday April 1, 2020, in the Muslim cemetery of Yoff in Dakar, in the greatest discretion. His burial took place in the early evening in the presence of staff from the hygiene services and the health authorities.
His funeral is quite shocking because he was buried without his loved ones.
Yatma Diop points out that:
“Pape Diouf deserved a national funeral. He was to be escorted to his last home by his friends, family and the sports world. But nothing can be done about this pandemic and the health measures taken. “

My personal tribute.
Having met him personally, Pape Diouf was a great man. He was always attentive to others and didn’t hesitate to support people in their projects. When I organized a soccer tournament for my organization He didn’t hesitate for a second to support me by coming for free for the event. When I was working on the radio in Marseille, I was fortunate to have an exclusive interview. He encouraged me in my career. Always good advice, the world has lost a very generous man, who had a big heart. Papa Diouf, I will miss you, may your soul rest in peace.
