The exceptional island of Fogo in Cape Verde

Fogo means fire. It is a beautiful island found in the south of the Cape Verde archipelago. It belongs to the Sotavento group of islands and is located west of the island of Santiago. With its mountains, its flora, its volcanoes and its sandy black beaches, you will have a lot of things to do in Fogo and to discover alone or with friends.

For those who love hiking, you must visit the volcano “Fogo”, which is the black pearl of the archipelago and its magnificent caldera which are must-see places in Cape Verde. Take up the challenge and climb the impressive Pico de Fogo, an active volcano culminating at 2,829 meters above sea level, which is one of the highest peaks of the archipelago. Very active, the volcano has a strong impact on the agriculture and the way of life of the inhabitants. Since 2020, the island is a biosphere reserve recognized by UNESCO.

The last awakening of Pico de Fogo took place from November 23, 2014 to February 8, 2015. It was very devastating, as it dumped about a hundred million tons of lava destroying everything in its path. The two main villages of the caldera, Portela and Bangaeira, where a thousand people lived, were engulfed. But as soon as the volcano fell asleep, 40% of the community returned to live there.

What are the different activities to do?

  • Discovery of the beautiful city of Sao Filipe and its old Portuguese houses.
  • Discovery of Cha das Caldeiras.
  • Hike on Mount Fogo, which is the only active volcano in the archipelago.
