Elegant South African married couples in Shweshwe
Very proud of their culture and tradition, South African married couples get married in traditional Shweshwe attire. This indigo blue, brown and red cotton fabric is the synonym of the elegance of the Xhosa ethnic group.
Origin and history of shweshwe
18th and 19th century, it was introduced to South Africa by German immigrants. Once the German settlers began to wear shwe shwe in the 19th century, Xhosa women began to introduce this fabric into their traditional dress, replacing animal skin outfits with cotton shwe shwe. They liked the blue hue of indigo, because this color embellished their ebony skin.
