The madras is a amazing fabric of  French West Indies and Caribbean. Proud of their culture, Caribbean women wear the colourful traditional garments. Colourful, these madras dresses elegantly embellish women overseas. 

Where did the madras come from?
The madras is a fabric with brightly coloured cotton checks. At the time, it was made of banana tree fibres. It comes from a famous city in India, also called Madras. Today, the name of this city is Chennai.

What are the types of dresses in the French West Indies and Caribbean?

In the French West Indies, there are 4 types of dresses worn by island women.

Grand’ Robe : it’s a colored or shiny fabric. It can be either printed cotton or silk.  Many women wear it with a scarf, a petticoat and beautiful gold jewellery.
Wob Dwiyet : it’s a floral cotton dress, with checks or stripes, in bright colours. It is a dress, which is worn every day, in everyday life.
The Titane : it’s a garment worn by courtesans.  More precisely, they wore a lace shirt open at the chest, showing their shoulders.
The Cotonnade : in calendered madras, it could be velvet or satin on feast days.

Creole costume is worn during traditional festivals and major events (weddings, baptisms, etc ).
